The worst time to buy an air conditioner in San Diego is the week you need one. Everybody replaces in September, during a Santa Ana, at emergency pricing, from whoever can come out. The result is a lot of oversized equipment installed badly on ductwork nobody looked at. If your system is limping and you know it, the honest advice is to do this in March.

Sizing is the decision that matters most, and it is the one most often botched
A great many contractors size a system by square footage. Four hundred square feet per ton, maybe five hundred, then round up because nobody ever got a complaint for installing too much capacity. In San Diego that rule of thumb produces systems that are meaningfully too large, because it was built around climates that punish undersizing far harder than this one does.
An oversized air conditioner cools the thermostat quickly, satisfies, and shuts off. Then it does it again twenty minutes later. Short cycling wears out compressors and contactors, never lets the system reach steady-state efficiency, and leaves the rooms farthest from the air handler uncomfortable while the hallway is freezing. You paid more for equipment that performs worse. It is the most expensive common mistake in residential HVAC.
What you want instead is a Manual J load calculation: an actual room-by-room accounting of your windows, orientation, insulation, infiltration and duct losses. It takes a contractor a couple of hours. Ask for it by name, and ask to see the output. A contractor who has one and will show it to you is a different kind of contractor than one who walks the house, says “you’re a four ton,” and writes a number on a clipboard.
Which climate zone your address sits in changes the answer
Title 24 splits this county. Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Point Loma and La Jolla sit in Climate Zone 7. El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside and Escondido are Zone 10, which the energy code treats as genuinely hot. Same county, different design conditions, different equipment, different load calc inputs. A load calculation run against the wrong zone is how a Kensington house ends up with a system sized for Santee.
This is also where the honest anti-sell lives. Within a mile or two of the water, central air conditioning is frequently not the right purchase at all. The marine layer does the work for most of the year, and two well-placed ductless heads will carry a North Park or Mission Hills bungalow through the dozen days that actually matter, for less money and without tearing into plaster. Spending twelve thousand dollars on a central system you run three weeks a year is a bad trade, and any contractor unwilling to say so out loud is selling rather than advising.
Inland, none of that applies. Santee runs past 100°F for stretches. There, cooling is what makes the house habitable, and the conversation is about doing it properly rather than whether to do it.
Your ducts are probably the constraint
New equipment on old ductwork is the second-most-common way this goes wrong. San Diego attics reach 130°F in a September heat run, and a 1980s duct system with dried-out cloth tape and failed mastic can lose a quarter of its conditioned air into that space before it reaches a register. Putting a high-efficiency condenser upstream of that does not fix it. You have simply bought a more expensive way to air-condition your attic.
California anticipated this. A changeout triggers a Title 24 requirement for an independent HERS rater, a third party, to pressure-test your duct leakage and verify the refrigerant charge after the install. Not the installing contractor. Somebody else, with their own instruments. Older San Diego duct systems fail that first test routinely, which means the sealing work actually has to happen before the job can close. People find this frustrating. It is the single best consumer protection in the whole process, and it is why a permitted install sometimes needs a second visit.
Permits run through San Diego Development Services inside the city, and through each jurisdiction’s own building department across the rest of the county. A contractor who offers to skip the permit is offering to hand you a problem that surfaces in escrow years from now.
Efficiency ratings and the refrigerant transition
Two things changed recently and both show up in quotes. Efficiency is now expressed in SEER2 rather than SEER, so a 14.3 SEER2 system is not a downgrade from the 16 SEER unit somebody quoted you five years ago. Different measuring stick, similar equipment. In the southwest region, 14.3 SEER2 is the regulatory floor for a split system.
The larger shift is refrigerant. R-410A is being phased down under the AIM Act and new equipment ships with R-454B or R-32, which are mildly flammable A2L refrigerants requiring different handling, different leak detection, and in some cases different line-set practice. If a contractor offers you remaining R-410A stock at a discount, that is a legitimate option rather than a scam, but ask how long they expect to service it and price the refrigerant accordingly. And whatever you install, the existing line set has to be properly flushed or replaced when the refrigerant changes. Reusing a contaminated line set is a quiet way to kill a new compressor.
Costs, and where the spread actually comes from
A straight AC changeout onto existing ducts generally lands between $7,000 and $12,000 in San Diego. Add duct replacement and you are between $11,000 and $20,000. A two-zone ductless system runs roughly $8,000 to $14,000, and a full heat pump system $12,000 to $20,000. Those are ranges, and they move for real reasons: tonnage, attic versus closet air handler location, line-set length, stucco penetrations, and whether the electrical panel has room for the circuit.
That last one catches people. Plenty of pre-1970 San Diego homes still run 100-amp services, and adding condenser load can push a panel past what it can carry, which turns a mechanical job into a mechanical job plus an electrical upgrade plus an SDG&E coordination timeline. Better to discover that during bidding than after demolition. Ask every bidder to confirm panel capacity in writing.
Within a mile of the ocean, specify an e-coated or factory coastal-package condenser coil. A few hundred dollars, and it is the difference between a unit that lasts fifteen years and one that leaks at eight.
What people ask before they sign
How many quotes should I get?
Three. And compare the scope, not the bottom line, because a cheap bid usually means something is missing rather than that somebody is generous.
Specifically, check whether each quote includes the permit, the HERS test, duct sealing or replacement, a new pad and disconnect, and the electrical work if any is needed. Two bids $3,000 apart are frequently the same bid once you line up what each one actually covers.
Heat pump or straight AC with a gas furnace?
San Diego’s winters make heat pumps technically ideal, because the technology is most efficient right around the 45°F to 50°F overnight lows the coast actually experiences. The complication is that SDG&E has some of the highest residential electricity rates in the country, so you are trading cheap therms for expensive kilowatt-hours. With solar and a time-of-use plan you understand, a heat pump usually wins. Without either, a high-efficiency furnace with straight AC often costs less to run. Price both, and ask for operating cost rather than just installed cost.
Are rebates worth chasing?
Often, particularly on heat pumps and smart thermostats. SDG&E programs, state incentives and federal tax credits all move around enough that any specific figure printed on a website goes stale quickly, so confirm what is live when you buy instead of trusting a page like this one. A contractor who files the paperwork for you is worth a modest premium.
How long does the install take?
A straight changeout is one day. Add ductwork and it is two or three. The HERS rater comes separately, usually within a week or two, and the permit closes after that.
