Whether an annual air conditioning tune-up is worth paying for in San Diego depends almost entirely on how far you live from the water, and nobody selling maintenance plans wants to answer it that way. Ten miles apart, two houses in this county have completely different answers. So start with which one you are.

Near the coast, corrosion is the whole argument
A condenser in Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach or the flats below La Jolla might run three weeks a year. Mechanically, that is nothing. The compressor is barely working. If wear were the only concern, you could skip service for years and be fine.
Salt is the concern. Marine air deposits chloride on the condenser coil continuously, whether the unit runs or not, and it attacks the aluminum fins and the copper-to-aluminum joints where the two metals meet. The failure is a slow refrigerant leak at eight or nine years in a unit that should have reached fifteen. You will not see it coming, because the visible symptom is just gradually worse cooling that everyone blames on a hot summer.
The countermeasure is unglamorous and it works. Rinse the coil with fresh water, gently, from the inside out, a few times a year. A homeowner with a garden hose and some care can do most of it. Once a year have someone with a coil cleaner and a fin comb do it properly and check the cabinet fasteners, which corrode before the coil does. That, plus filters, is genuinely most of what a coastal system needs. A four-hundred-dollar annual plan to service a unit that runs twenty days a year is not good value, and you should feel free to say so.
Inland, the case flips completely
El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside, Poway, Escondido and the rest of Climate Zone 10 are a different world. Systems there run hard from June into October and see stretches past 100 degrees. Now the equipment is doing real work, parts genuinely wear, and an annual service before the season is straightforwardly worth the money.
The single most valuable thing a tech does on that visit is measure the run capacitor against its nameplate rating. Capacitors degrade quietly, losing microfarads over years, and a weak one makes the compressor struggle to start until one afternoon it simply does not. That is the number one no-cool call in July. The part costs under thirty dollars and takes ten minutes to swap in April. In July it costs you a same-day emergency fee and a night in the heat, if a truck is available at all.
Contactors are the same story. So is a condensate drain, which matters more here than people expect, because a system that sits idle for eight months grows algae in a dry pan and then clogs the first week it runs. The float switch does its job and shuts the system down, and the homeowner concludes the compressor died. It did not. The drain was blocked.
What a real tune-up includes, and what a fake one is
The cheap seasonal tune-up advertised everywhere in spring is usually a loss leader. The visit is priced below cost because the visit is not the product. Finding things to sell you is the product, and in a lot of shops the technician’s pay reflects that.
So judge by instruments. A genuine service means superheat and subcooling measured and written down, static pressure read across the coil, amp draw checked on the compressor and the blower motor, capacitor microfarads compared to nameplate, the condensate line flushed and the float switch tested, the coil cleaned rather than glanced at, and the electrical connections torqued. Ask for the numbers afterward. A one-page sheet with actual readings is what separates a service from a walk-through, and it gives you a baseline to compare against next year.
Two upsells deserve resistance. The first is a refrigerant top-off with no leak search. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, it is leaking, and adding gas without finding the leak is renting cooling for a season while venting the old charge into the atmosphere. Ask where the leak is. The second is ultraviolet lights and duct sanitizing sold as routine maintenance rather than as a response to something specific found in your system. Decline unless someone can show you the problem it solves.
Filters, which is the part you actually control
More systems are hurt by filters than helped by tune-ups. The common error is buying the highest MERV rating on the shelf under the reasonable-sounding theory that more filtration is better. On a residential blower sized for a one-inch filter, a very dense media restricts airflow enough to drop capacity, freeze the evaporator coil in cooling, and shorten blower motor life.
MERV 8 to 11 is the sane range for most equipment here. If somebody in the house has real allergies and you want better filtration, the correct answer is a four-inch media cabinet with the surface area to support it, not a denser one-inch filter. Change it on a schedule you can actually remember. Every three months is fine for most San Diego homes, more often inland during a heavy run, and more often again if you are near construction or a canyon that dries out in September.
When to book, and what it costs
March and April. Not July. Every HVAC company in the county is underbooked in early spring and drowning by the first heat wave, and the difference shows up in both price and in who they send. A single tune-up generally runs $90 to $180 in San Diego. Annual plans typically land between $150 and $350 and usually bundle two visits, priority scheduling and a discount on repairs.
Whether the plan is worth it comes back to geography. Inland, with a system running four months a year, the priority scheduling alone can justify it in a bad August. On the coast, with a unit running twenty days a year, pay for a single visit every other year, rinse the coil yourself in between, and put the difference toward the coastal-rated replacement coil you will eventually want. That is the better use of the same money.
