    No off-season, and what that does to the hardware

    Gas equipment in this county gets a long rest. Nine or ten months of nothing, which is why twenty-five-year-old furnaces are still common in Clairemont. A heat pump never gets that. It cools through the September Santa Ana runs and heats through the damp mornings in February, so the compressor, the contactor, the fan motor and the capacitor all accumulate runtime at three or four times the rate the same parts would in a cooling-only system.

    The honest implication is that heat pumps need service more often than the gas systems they replaced, and a maintenance interval that was optional on a furnace is not optional here. That is not an argument against the technology. It is an argument for knowing what you signed up for, because plenty of San Diego homeowners were sold a heat pump on efficiency and rebates without anyone mentioning the service side.

    Salt gets a year-round shot at a coastal heat pump

    An AC condenser in Ocean Beach sits idle most of the winter. A heat pump in the same yard is running, pulling salt aerosol across the coil every day of the year. Corrosion that would take a decade on a cooling-only unit shows up in six or seven years: chalky white bloom on the aluminum fins, then pinhole leaks at the copper joints, then a system that will not hold charge no matter how many times somebody tops it off.

    If you live within about a mile of the water and your heat pump is losing refrigerant repeatedly, stop paying for refrigerant. Ask for a leak search with an electronic detector or nitrogen pressure test, and ask specifically whether the outdoor coil is the source. A coil replacement on a system past ten years old is rarely worth it. On a newer one it usually is, and if you are replacing anyway, specify an e-coated or factory coastal coil package. It adds a few hundred dollars and it is the best money in the whole install.

    Charge is not a detail on this equipment

    On a straight air conditioner, being slightly low on refrigerant costs you some capacity. On a heat pump it is worse, because the machine has to move heat in both directions and the charge window that satisfies both modes is narrower. An undercharged heat pump can cool acceptably in August and then heat badly in January, which is why the complaint so often arrives months after the visit that caused it.

    What that means practically: a technician who adds refrigerant by feel, without weighing it in or checking superheat and subcooling against the manufacturer’s chart, is guessing on a system where guessing does not work. Ask what the target subcooling was and what they measured. A good tech will answer without hesitating.

    Symptoms, and which ones are actually normal

    Some of what looks alarming on a heat pump is the machine behaving correctly, and some of what looks fine is expensive. Sorting those two is most of the value of a good diagnosis.

    • Steam rising off the outdoor unit on a cool damp morning, with the indoor air going briefly cool: normal defrost.
    • A loud whoosh or thunk when the system switches between heating and cooling: the reversing valve. Normal.
    • Ice that stays on the coil for an hour or more instead of clearing in ten minutes.
    • The thermostat showing auxiliary or emergency heat on a mild day, which means the compressor is not carrying the load and electric strips are, at SDG&E rates.
    • Heating fine but cooling poorly, or the reverse, which points at the reversing valve or the charge rather than at the compressor.
    • Breaker tripping on startup.

    That fourth one deserves emphasis because it hides. The house stays warm, nothing sounds wrong, and the only evidence is a utility bill that jumped by a couple hundred dollars. In a county with some of the highest residential electricity rates in the United States, a heat pump silently running on strip heat is the most costly HVAC failure that produces no obvious symptom.

    Refrigerant, warranties, and the repair-or-replace line

    R-410A is being phased down under the AIM Act, and new equipment now ships with R-454B or R-32. Existing R-410A systems remain serviceable and nobody needs to panic. But the supply cost of R-410A is climbing, which shifts the arithmetic on a large leak repair in an older system toward replacement rather than another recharge.

    Check your warranty before authorizing anything major. Most manufacturers give ten years on parts and some give ten or twelve on the compressor, but nearly all of them require the system to have been registered within 60 to 90 days of installation, and a startling number of San Diego installs never were. If yours was not registered the coverage often drops to five years. Find the model and serial on the outdoor unit and call the manufacturer directly. It takes ten minutes and it occasionally saves several thousand dollars.

    The most common question is whether a general HVAC company can handle a heat pump. Most can. But a fair number of technicians in this county built their careers on gas furnaces and straight air conditioning, because until recently that is what San Diego had, and heat pump diagnosis in heating mode is the weak spot. If a tech tells you a defrost cycle is a malfunction, or wants to replace a compressor without having checked the reversing valve, get a second opinion before you spend four figures.
